As a kid, Chance (voiced by Will Cannon) grew up on a beautiful farm
and could dream for hours - but then he got snatched by someone who wanted
him to become a fighting dog in prize fights. Now Chance never saw the use
in fighting let alone killing one's uponent, but he had talent, and it
wasn't long before he became a top prize fighter. He had however never
ceased to dream, which is what attracted lovely Sugar (Peppur Chambers) to
him rather than his best friend Hannibal (Eddie Goines), top fighter of
the place. Chance wants to get out to find a better place where all dogs
can live in peace, and thus dugs a whole under the fence for him and Sugar
to escape, but ultimately it's only him to make a getaway before their
human "owner" is alerted. Out in the streets, Chance doesn't
fare very well, lacking streetsmarts, and it's only a matter of time
before he's captured by another prize fight promoter, and trained by world
wary Thor (Joe Grubbs) to become a killer. Chance breaks out again, but
when he comes to rescue Sugar, he learns she's pregnant from Hannibal, as
the two thought Chance was long dead. Chance is soon re-captured by his
new "owner", and having lost the one thing that has meant the
most to him, he lets Thor train him into a ruthless killing machine. But
then the day of the big last-dog-standing tournamet arrives, and he learns
one of his opponents is Hannibal ... Of course, this movie
wears its message on its sleeve, that organized dogfights are bad - and
there are only few who would oppose this I'm sure. However, the film
doesn't try to overwhelm one with its message but creates a plot with lots
of heart to support it, and really puts storytelling above everything
else. And sure, Chance isn't exactly free of clichés, but likeable
and relatable characters, easy-on-the-eye character designs and animation,
and just the right balance between realism and fable-like fantasy make
this film really compelling, and also a pretty good watch.
