Cardiologist Katka (Leslie Dame) has just found out that her 6 year old
granddaughter has some incurable heart disease, and that upsets her so
much that she doesn't even dare tell her daughter. Something inexplicable
though draws her to Central Park, New York City, where she finds drawings
made by her granddaughter about things the little girl has no business
knowing. Also in Central Park, Katka meets Mr. Peter (Luke Mindell), an
eccentric sage-like man who brings Katka in touch with her own past that's
actually directly tied to Central Park, as it was there she became member
of a coven of witches, and a quite powerful one, too, as she had natural
talent - talent apparently inherited by her granddaughter, as is revealed
by Stacy (Christina Elise Perry), her best (witch-)friend from back when
who's still very much part of the coven and who tells her the girl,
without knowing it, has second sight, which make her a threat in the eyes
of another coven represented by Broozy Suzy (Jennifer Eiffert), with whom
Katka tries to bargain for the life of her granddaughter - but Broozy Suzy
won't accept anything less than Katka being crucified in exchange for the
little one. And not trusting Broozy Suzy to begin with, Katka goes looking
for another way to save the girl, not knowing if the other way isn't even
more dangerous ... A slowburn piece of horror that manages,
without much spectacle, too fancy locations or too big a cast to create a
world all of its own, mainly through clever storytelling and a narrative
structure that does a good job giving away story elements only by the by
to keep the viewer invested in the build-up rather than only the pay-off.
And thanks to a direction that's at the same time subtle and getting the
most out of the locale, and very natural performances to ground the film,
this has turned out an enjoyably creepy piece of genre cinema that's well
worth a watch.
