recruit Rancich (Peter van Eyck) is driving everybody mad at the police
academy, since he, a fugitive from Europe, always boasts about his
accomplishments with the Czech underground, likes to display his physical
strength to a degree where he hurts other recruits, and thinks the main
function of a policeman is to get respect from the populace via displaying
his superiority. Everybody on the academy thinks it would be best to let
Rancich go, everybody but Lt Adams (Peter Leeds), who knows the recruit's
heart is in the right place - something Rancich is allowed to show in the
finale when he persuades a Hungarian couple struck with fear of the
authorities to give themselves up to the police by praising the American
way of life. Rather silly moral tale that oversimplifies both
the motives of its immigrant protagonist and the merits of the American
way of life. Mildly funny for its naive (even by 50's standards) views
though.
