After a life of petty crime and several stays in juvenile
penitentiaries, Brad's (P.J. Boudousqué) life hits rockbottom when in a
tussle, his girlfriend (Stephanie Simbari) is shot dead, and he's at least
partly to blame (though there was no intent) ... and thus he is sent to
Coldwater juvenile reform facility, pretty much a boot camp installed to
break juvenile delinquents at a young age and re-educate them to good
little soldiers - and thus it's of little surprise that most of the guards
were once inmates themselves, and most of them still have a sadistic edge
to them. And the fact that the place is run by self righteous and
alcoholic ex-marine Colonel Reichert (James C. Burns) who thinks he does
the right thing but lacks social skills, self criticism and foresight
doesn't make things very easy. At first, Brad has difficulty fitting in,
and after his one friend inside Jonas' (Octavius J. Johnson) is broken
beyond repair (and intentionally so), Brad even attempts a break-out - but
he doesn't get very far ... Back in, Brad changes his attitude, wins the
trust of the Colonel and soon is promoted to trustee, which also grants
him special privileges. Really, with his current behaviour, he should be
out in no time ... but then the new inmates arrive, and one of them is
Gabriel, who has been like a brother he always looked after on the
outside. But while Brad is largely assimilated, Gabriel still has a street
attitude and is quite a bit of a bottle rocket. At first, Brad feels a bit
annoyed by Gabriel even and sees him as a threat to his own release ...
but then he sees him mistreated by the Colonel and his staff, tortured
even, something that he goes beyond what he or even Jonas have ever
experienced, and he decides to help Gabriel escape, and he provides him
with evidence against the Colonel and his staff even, to leave with the
next police station. But then Gabriel is found dead only a few miles away
from the facility ... and though it looks like an accident, all the
inmates know it was murder - and this can only lead to disaster ... Coldwater
is a pretty clever juvenile prison flick as it keeps its audience in the
dark in which direction it might lead to, and rather than just condemning
the methods used in the facility, it actually shows things from the point
of view from the Colonel for a while - to rather than just hammer home its
point for the entire movie to see this world slowly crumble. A rather laid
back pace, lack of sensationalism and non-linear narrativeapproach also
help immensely to bring across the film's ultimate point in a very fitting
way. And add to that a very capable ensemble cast playing a cast of
interesting characters and you've got yourself a pretty good and
compelling movie.
