A rich man ashes his cigar into a trash bin - that just happens to be
the shelter of a homeless man, who's understandably outraged. Instead of
getting into an argument though, the rich man decides on conducting a
social experiment where he lets his friend partake in the pleasures of
life only money can buy - like good food, fine wine, fancy cocktails. And
he even takes him on a shopping spree with him and his girlfriend (Anni
Caspers), even if our poor friend isn't allowed into all the fancy shops -
which is when the homeless man sees the boundaries that money can create,
boundaries that his newfound "friend" is more than happy to
accept and shove into his face, really. Which is when the homeless man
decides on an ultimate act of violence to take over the life of his rich
friend - but to what consequences?
Shot in black and white without any dialogue (but on-screen
sound), this film of course pays homage to silent cinema, also in
cinematic language, gestures and costumes - but that's just one aspect of
the film as it doesn't let its fascination for a bygone era weigh down its
storytelling in any way but tells a rather touching fable about the often
corrupting powers of money in an impressive way, also helped by grounded
performances by all involved, and despite the tragic of the story a
willingness to entertain.
