Grace (Jena Malone) is a doctor as compassionate as they come, who cares
for the poor and judging by her deeds couldn't be a better person. And
then she learns about the suicide of her brother michael (Stefan Cennydd),
who was a priest, and what's more, before he has killed himself he's said
to have also murdered another priest. Of course, Grace immediately drives
up to the nunnery in Scotland where her brother has served - and has a
weird vision of his death that ultimately makes her pass out, and she
ultimately wakes up within the nunnery, in a sister's habit, and the
Mother Superior (Janet Suzman) tells her she and the nuns have saved her
from drowning. But Grace doesn't trust the Mother Superior, who's pretty
extreme n her beliefs, one bit and thinks she's up to something - and
she's only confirmed in her suspicions by investigating detective Harris
(Thoren Ferguson) and even the investigator sent from Rome Father Romero
(Danny Huston). But one thing is clear, the Mother Superior is adamant to
keep her in the convent - not that Grace wants to leave before getting
some answers about her brother -, but at the same time she to a degree
fears Grace ... and so do all the other nuns, really, which is odd to
Grace who tried to be a good person all of her life and isn't prepared for
being feared. Thing is, about then, she also starts to remember the
violent history of her family, and she starts having visions of violence
within the convent walls. And then the nuns start to die ...
Consecration sure is a clever horror thriller, for one because for the
longest time it refuses to give away its game and plays out like a murder
mystery with some religious zealots, with its horror underscores mainly
provided by atmosphere-drenched imagery. And when the film finally goes
all-out horror, it still keeps its mysterious aura, going so far as to
blurring the line between good and evil that it so far drew itself. And
thanks also to a horror savvy direction and a competent cast not
overplaying it, this has become a really cool genre ride. Vertigo Releasing will release Consecration June 16th, 2025.
