Now crop circles are a very fascinating subject for sure, because while
their initial wave was proven to be hoaxes (and admitted to be by the
perpetrators who willingly demonstrated their methods), and were probably
inspired by a legend from the 17th century (that's touched upon in this
documentary), they continue popping up all over England and even in other
places around the world. With that in mind, are they really man-made? This
documentary answers this with a resounding no - but if not, are they
really created by aliens, and what do the aliens want to communicate? And
why don't they use a simpler and more effective form of communication,
especially taking into account that at least one crop circle (according to
this movie) was actually written in morse code? Now the topic
of this documentary certainly is fascinating, as are the many pictures of
crops circles and especially their interpretations. Where the documentary
is flawed though, it takes its "experts" - three researchers who
obviously want to believe - at face value, does not go out of its way to
ask actual scientists (like botanists or biologists that know about crop)
or even the proven pranksters from back in the day for their expertise,
thus replacing hard fact with idealism - and as a result, this movie falls
short of convincing any non-believers like me that crop circles are
anything but a(n admittedly very elaborate and very mysterious) hoax. That
said, the stories this movie has to tell are still very fascinating, it's
just a bit of a shame that objectivity has been thrown out of the window
for sensationalism.
