In the future, humankind has been pretty much ravaged by the plague,
and the survivors are desperate to find a cure - not all survivors though,
there are gangs of outlaws marauding the countryside who thrive in the
lawlessness of the plague-stricken world. Now a cure for the plague has
been found though, and it's implanted into cyborg Pearl (Dayle Haddon) -
who has one problem though, she needs to get the cure to Atlanta, and her
path leads through a region controlled by villain Fender (Vincent Klyn)
and his gang of pillagers, and Fender doesn't want the plague to be cured.
Pearl makes the acquaintance of Gibson (Jean-Claude Van Damme), a slinger
(= a person who gets people through the wastelands safely) whom she tries
to hire, but before she can she's captured by Fender and company. Nady
(Deborah Richter) wants to save Pearl, but being a petite woman with only
marginal fight skills, she's really not much of a match, so she tries to
hire Gibson - but Gibson's not really interested in being a do-gooder,
only in killing Fender, who back in the day has killed his family. So the
two travel to cut off Fender, who's on his way to Atlanta to take the city
with Pearl's (involuntary) help, but there are many dangers along the way.
And even once they've met up with Fender and company, they're grossly
outnumbered and outmatched ... Now ok, if you plan to watch a Cannon-produced
Jean-Claude Van Damme sci-fi vehicle, chances are you're not expecting an
artistic statement about the deeper questions of humankind but a pulpy
action flick with a simplistic plot and much action and violcence along
the way - and that essentially is what Cyborg is ... and it's
pretty good at it, too, as director Albert Pyun puts in more than just a
hack job, instead making this feel like a post-apocalyptic nihilistic
western, heavy on atmosphere, using only certain layers of the colour
spectrum and bringing the thing alive with interesting camera work unusual
angles and the like, and he gives Van Damme, whose acting range is rather
limited, a role he can actually fill - all of which make this actually a
very decent genre movie.
