1998: The world has become an ecological desaster, being on the outside
for any significant amount of time has become a threat, and the television
has become a more important means of communication than ever before. In
front of that backdrop, TV-repairman Jan (Michal
Juszczakiewicz) bumps into unconventional primaballerina Ewa
(Hanna
Dunowska), and this chance encounter alone makes him
question everything about his conformist life, even his own relationship -
so much so that he and his life partner seperate. But when Jan finally
tries to make his move on Ewa, he has to realize she's in a relationship
with someone else, Allan (Marek
Barbasiewicz), a successful, yuppie-style entrepreneur who
promises Ewa her own show - and as if to humiliate Jan, he gives him a job
at the event. During the show though, a sextape featuring Allan and Ewa is
played on a video wall, which makes Jan totally lose his cool, have a
public breakdown and ultimately cut the shows power and make a getaway -
which was all foreseen by Allan, who has counted on Jan's involuntary
participation in the show all along. After the show, Jan wants to kill
himself, but is saved from certain death by electrocution by aliens, who
help him see more clearly (including Ewa's status as Allan's trophy wife),
and thanks to them, Jan ultimately manages to get out of the way when his
society starts crumbling down. In parts a quite fascinating
little science fiction tale, relying more on carefully arranged pictures
than lavish sets, on social satire rather than big effects, this film
however is less than perfect because it puts too much emphasis on the
relationship angle of its plotline and thus taking the bite out of the
satire, rather than relying on its anti-utopian premise. Still worth
watching though for its original approach to the sci-fi genre as such.
