Backin 1989, when the film Society
was
released, it came and went somewhatt under-appreciated, as its wild
combination of social satire and body horror was probably just too far out
for contemporary audiences, but over the years the film developed into a
cult classic for the very same reason. What people don't know - and even
director Brian Yuzna didn't know at a time is thatlarge parts of the
script - not the body horror part though - was based on screenwriter Zeph
E. Daniel's (formerly Woody Keith) own youth, as his wealthy and
influential parents were in an exclusive grooming circle with Zeph bbeing
one off their victims - and when he wanted out things got very dark, some
of which is detailed in te movie ... One thing's for sure,
even more so than its subject matter
Society, this documentary isn't
for the faint of heart, as in his descritionn of his own youth and
upbringing, Zeph E. Daniel doesn't exactly hold back. But that said, that
the film actually works, and engagingly so, is because it's nicely
structured, rather nicely compliments Daniel's story with corresponding
scenes from the movie as well as interviews with
Society's crew, contemporaries
and the like to paint a rounded out picture - which this documentary does
rather beautifully. And sure, to properly appreciate this film, having
seen Society first
doesn't hurt - but even to those who haven't this might be a fascinating
watch.
