When she returns home from a business trip, Annie (Meera Rohit
Kumbhani) finds a sort of fort made out of boxes in her living room - and
inside, there's apparently her boyfriend Dave (Nick Thune), whom she can
hear but not see, and who claims this is the maze he's been working on all
weekend, and he has perfected it to such a degree that he can't find his
way out again - which sounds ridiculous, because how hard can it be to get
out of a cardboard maze smaller than your average living room -, but he
also doesn't let her destroy it to get him out as he's made such an effort
to build it. He doesn't even let her enter the maze because he claims it's
boody-trapped. Out of ideas what to do, Annie calls Dave's friend Gordon
(Adam Busch) for assistance ... and thanks to him, the apartment is soon
full of people, from a team of documentary filmmakers (James Urbaniak,
Frank Caeti, Scott Narver) to random Flemish tourists (Kamilla Alnes, Drew
Knigga) and a hobo (Rick Overton). And before you know it, everybody gets
into the maze - which in fact is waaay bigger on the inside than the
outside ... so before long everyone does get lost just like Dave, and
there are really booby-traps in there, plus a minotaur (half made out of
cardboard though), so people do start to die. Annie, Gordon and the
documentarians though do stick together and find Dave, and try to figure
out what the hell is going on and how to fix it - which is easier said
than done as the maze has taken on a life of its own and thus follows its
own rules ... and how to fix something that doesn't necessary follow the
rules of logic - or even laws of nature? It's almost sure to
say, you haven't seen a film like Dave Made a Maze before:
Basically, its premise doesn't make any sense and fortunately never tries
to explain anything away, but the art design that originates from the pure
premise is a wonder to behold by itself. But even if the premise is
non-sensical, the film is narratively perfectly structured and uses genre
mainstays with quite some gusto while the tongue's firmly in cheek. Plus,
the film features some awesome surreal ideas that are brought to life
almost exclusively via practical effects, so it's really a movie to marvel
at - but also laugh about, as the whole thing's just dang funny besides
everything else! One not to be missed!
