Of all the cryptids out there, the Michigan Dogman has probably the weirdest "origin" (if you want to call it that), as it saw its first mention in a country novelty song from 1987 by radio DJ Steve Cook that was quite literally meant as a joke, his own personal prank for his 1987 first of April radio show. Now part of the song was made up out of thin air, but part was based on existing urban legends, just to add credibility to the story. However, it didn't remain a joke for very long, as soon, phonecalls started to pour into the radio station about people having witnessed the Dogman, which is essentially a dog or wolf creature able to walk on its hindlegs, and reaching the height of a tall human being (of course, accounts vary here), and it's all not only consitent with Cook's song but also the urban legends it's based on as well as Native American lore - and this way, Michigan got its own cryptid, and the Dogman it's own historian in the (now deceased) Linda Godfrey, a woman dedicated to bring oral history about the Dogman to paper without prejudice ...

... and in a way, this is exactly what this movie does, it records oral history rather than trying to force what's basically an unproven legend down one's throat. And frankly, some of the stories recounted in this documentary are pretty wild, ranging from a gouvernment conspiracy to creatures from another dimension - but then of course, everyone is entitled to their opinions on the phenomenon. Plus, it's very commendable of this film to start with the April Fool's prank that kicked the legend off, but as much was to be expected from filmmaker Seth Breedlove, a documentarian on cryptids and the like who never lets his fascination for any given subject get in the way of the truth. So does this documentary prove the existence of the Dogman? Hell no, but by shining light on the story from many different angles, it creates a fascinating narrative that's sure worth a watch.
