Romance is pretty much gone out of the marriage of Michael (Todd
Birmingham) and Madeline (Jenn Barbieri), much to the dismay of Michael,
who'd like to spice things up a bit again but hits a concrete wall with
his wife - and he knows it's at least partly his fault. But today
Madeline cuts him a deal, if he occupies their three tween to teen
children (Natalie, Evan and Kathleen Birmingham) all day while she's at
work, she will have some "special" time with him in the evening. Now
Michael loves his children, and they love him back, but he doesn't really
know what to do with them, so their activities together, like dog-napping
or breaking into other people's gardens to have fun in their pools, might
not be exactly child-appropriate But the kids enjoy it ... and yet,
Michael isn't sure he has done enough, so he hires a hypnotist (James
Liotta) to give them more memories, while he goes looking for his wife's
ex-boyfriend for some romantic advice - to find out the ex is not a "boy"
at all but a very sexy female stripper (Olga N. Bogdanova). At the same
time, a burglar (Shane Gilman) is roaming the neighbourhoos, his next
destination; Michael's house ... A Deal is a lot of
fun due to the situations Michael is getting himself into, mostly due to
his insecurities and attempts to over-compensate - which is also what
gives the film so much heart, with its protagonist just being the perfect
everyman, his issues being perfectly relatable. And Todd Birmingham
embodies the character just so very well as an insecure but
likeableaverage guy, and he's surrounded by a very solid supporting cast.
So in all, a really fun watch.
