Comedy writer Rob (Dick Van Dyke) is invited to his son Ritchie's
(Larry Matthews) school as "Father of the Week" and is supposed
to do a talk about his work in front of Ritchie's class of 6 year olds.
Thing is, Ritchie doesn't want Rob to go as he's afraid his dad will
embarrass him. Also "Father of the Week" isn't quite the honour
Rob thinks it to be as all the other father's of Rob's class have also
been it. Now when Rob begins his speech, it seems Ritchie's worst fears
are fulfilled, he stutters his way through a very dry speech about comedy
that goes over the head of every six year old - and really even the kids'
teacher (Isabel Randolph). But when Rob accidently trips and the kids
start to laugh, he realizes what he has to do to capture the kids'
attention ... Basically a re-working of the series unofficial
pilot The Comedy Spot -
Head of the Family, this one is an improvement over that by
putting physical comedy into the mix, something Dick Van Dyke is very good
at. Other than that, this is pretty much a routine episode, with Dick Van
Dyke and Mary Tyler Moore continuing to show great chemistry, and Morey
Amsterdam and Rose Marie having their moments as well. Nothing too
memorable perhaps, but a nice piece of nostalgia.
