Debora (Barbara Ronchi) is desperately looking for a job, so when she has a job interview with Riccardo Schicchi (Pietro Castellitto) and it goes really well, she almost congratulates herself - until she finds out Riccardo runs a film studiio specializing in porn. And when he asks her to come to his office despite the fact it's a weekend, she's almost ready to run, fearing to be put on a casting couch. But Riccardo's somewhat helpless charm and her desperate financial situation convince her otherwise, and she's pleasently surprised that Riccardo doesn't make a move on her and offers her a genuine secretarial job. Sure, she needs some time to come to terms with the fact that the actual stucio is right next to her office and naked people seem to go in and out pretty much constantly, but she soon starts to like and enjoy the atmosphere of Riccardo's company that's more family like than anything else. Now Riccardo has come to fame for discovering Cicciolina (Lidija Kordic) back in the late 70s when he was still a photographer, and he pretty much drifted into making poern along side her and made her the first Italian porn superstar, with Moana Pozzi (Denise Capezza) following close behind. Thing is, he went into porn because he believed in free love and never touched any of the fils he worked with in his movies or strip clubs - all but one, Eva Henger (Tesa Litvan), but her he had genuinely fallen in love with and would later marry. However, he never let Eva do any porn - until things gor financially desperate because he trusted the wrong people and now owed them a lot of money, and she begs him to let her try her hands on porn - and despite his express reservations, he isn't one to say no to the woman he loves, and made her way to the Italian porn throne, something she would later come to regret, but never would she remonstrate Riccardo. As a result, they would always stay close, even when they broke up and Eva fell in love with another man (Davide Iachini). She wouldn't even ask for a divorce then, something Riccardo didn't want anyways but wouldn't have said no. However, nobody can stay on top forever, and once the internet hit the business changed, and Riccardo failed to change with it - and that's before shit really starts to hit the fan ...

Now given the film's subject matter, Sex Diva is a movie with astoundingly little sleaze and an astounging amount of heart - I mean, sure there are naked women every now and again and very brief sex scenes, but the focus is really on its ensemble of main characters and the arcs they live through over the course of the film. And of course it helps that these characters are well fleshed out, relatable, and well played, as does a clever screenplay that dares to net tell its story chronologically but makes associative jumps forward and backward in time every now and again, to this way paint a full picture, that's beautifully carried by an elegant directorial effort. And all of this together makes this a really worthwhile watch.
