12 year oldGrace (Junie Liv Thomasson) is heartbroken because her mum
(Debbie Allen) has just died from cancer, and she's not happy that she's
to live with her aunt Carrie (Nancy Anne Ridder) now while her sister
Billie's (Tina Martinez) going to stay in their childhood home. So during
the long drive over to aunt Carrie, the communication between the two
sisters is somewhat frosty ... and then the car breaks down in the middle
of the woods, and of course this particular area just happens to be the
stomping ground of a gas-mask wearing madman (Christian Sorokin) who goes
around murdering people in all sorts of ways, and taping it on his vintage
camcorder. And sure enough, he soon manages to kill Billie, but Grace
manages to escape, and always manages to stay a step or two ahead the
killer, at one time also helped by a jogger (Dante B. Salazar) who just
happens to cross their way and who distracts the killer - and it doesn't
end well for the jogger. Eventually, Grace stumbles upon Hayley (Saga
Pernille Johnsen Muro), a girl about her age who has managed to evade the
killer for a week now, and together the two decide to fight back - but of
course they're just two little girls against an armed mountain of a man
...
Now I wouldn't call Don't Make a Sound a perfect film,
as it follows the slasher formula just a little too closely without
offering any variation, let alone anything new/novel. But if indie
slashers are your thing, you might end up liking this one nevertheless,
there's plenty of suspense and some well-placed jumpscares in here, it
does get bloody when it needs to, and the rather impressive outdoors
scenery is put to good use. Not a film for everybody, that's for sure, but
solid genre entertainment at least.
