Ray Balfi (Turk Matthews) is one of the many dreamers who have come to
Hollywood expecting to make it big quickly as a screenwriter - to then
realize that in Hollywood the roads aren't paved with gold, and in order
to make it, one has to work hard ... and on the sidelines have a job to
make a living. Now since Ray's an ex-convict, it's not exactly easy for
him to find a regular job, but he has found employ with drug kingpin Rudy
(Eliot) as one of his pushers. In the meantime he also works on his
screenplay The Dog's Meow, a story about a dog going undercover as
a cat, and is convinced once it's finished Hollywood will snap it up for
10 million Dollars, something he can't stop to talk about, preferably to
his almost-girlfriend, prostitute Maureen (Madelyn Allen), whom he
promises a better life with him, whether she wants it or not. Eventually,
Ray finishes his screenplay and sends it off to 100 film studios, as he
figures with 100 applications one just has to work out - but he only gets
one rejection letter after the next. Meanwhile, weird things are going on
behind the scenes of Rudy's operation, as quite a few of his pushers end
up dead, and so does Ray's parole officer (Brad Eledge) - all suspicious
enough for the police to suspect Ray as the killer, which in turn sends
Ray's life on a downward spiral. And then he learns that The Dog's Meow
has gone into production and has already set a release date - but his
writing credit has been replaced with a bogus name, and since he has never
registered his script, it could have been anyone to have stolen it. And
this really is enough to send Ray over the edge ...
Dreaming Hollywood is a rather deliciously dark tale
about Hollywood's underbelly, a film with a clear indie vibe that is
equally reminiscent of Quentin Tarantino as of the writings of Hunter S.
Thompson, with traces of Barton Fink and even bits of The
Disaster Artist, but peopled with enough eccentric characters and
original plottwists to still make this one feel fresh and new. And a very
fluid directorial effort, a steady pace, some sharp dialogue that shifts
back and forth between comedy and drama, and a solid cast all see to it
that one's well-entertained throughout watching this movie.
