Julie (Tilda Swinton) takes her elderly mother (also Tilda Swinton) on
a vacation to a hotel in the Welsh countryside, a hotel that had once been
their family manor that mother just needed to revisit for closure, and
also to celebrate mom's birthday. At the hotel, mother and daughter seem
to be the only guests, and the scarce personnel doesn't seem to be
superhappy about their intrusion and give them odd looks every now and
again. Also the place seems to be on the creepy side, with odd sounds
heard from almost everywhere, as if the memories from the past would
return to haunt the living. And in a way that's exactly what's going on,
just not in the way one would expect ... Now on one hand this
film is beautifully made, fittingly atmospheric to boot, and makes great
use of its impressing main location. And it goes without saying that Tilda
Swinton is just great in both of her roles. On the other hand, it's also a
very slowburn sort of film, and while slowburn usually isn't a bad thing
at all, it doesn't help much here as it seems The Eternal Daughter
has just one point to make and just makes it over and over, while the big
reveal in the finale pretty much gives itself away very early on, making
it rather anti-climactic. Which is somewhat of a shame, as this is an
otherwise really well-made film that remains haunting throughout without
ever relying on spectacle, which in itself is already an achievement.
