Mary (Amy Louise Hall) loses her job as a stripper because of an
argument with her boyfriend right at the club she works at, and she loses
her boyfriend because he can't cope with her being a stripper. Out of a
job and her relationship at the same time, and in desperate need for
money, she signs up to test an experimental drug - sex drug to be precise.
She doesn't double-check the company she's testing the drug for, but even
if she did, she probably would not have found out that they've planted
hidden cameras all over her apartment to ... "monitor" her I
suppose is the official term. Mary doesn't even become suspicious when the
doctor performing the medical exam asks her to get naked a few times too
often ... The first time Mary takes the drug she only feels dizziness,
and eventually pain all over her body. She has a blackout, and when she
comes to, the doctor has brought her to bed - she has no idea what
happened in the hours she was out. The next time she takes the drug though
she feels a sudden urge to masturbate ... and is more than a little
embarrassed when the doctor catches her doing so - even if (or exactly
because) he tells her there's nothing wrong with this. Soon though, she
becomes addicted to the drug, takes more than she's supposed to, more
frequently, too, and gives in to all her sexual urges - and considering
the shady doctor and the even shadier company he works for, that can only
lead to disaster ... In its best moments, The Experiment:
Who's Watching You? is a delicious and appropriately perverted sexual
nightmare, that, despite being made on an obviously miniscule budget, gets
the most out of the limited resources at hand and manages to create an
otherworldly atmosphere through clever editing, colour grading, overlaying
images and the like, paired with a welcome neglect to explain everything
away. But that said, actually especially that said, the film doesn't rise
to its full potential, mainly due to structural issues: Basically, despite
the film ending in a nightmare sequence that defies explanation, it takes
too long to set the whole thing up, throws secondary characters and
subplots into what's basically a single-person narrative that don't make
all that much sense, and the real tension doesn't even set in until rather
late in the film. Still, the whole thing is worth a look, plus lead
actress Amy Louise Hall brings just the right amount of vulnerability
paired with quite a bit of spunk to the role to carry the film - so if
you're in for something a bit on the perverted side, you will not regret
watching this ...
