Rose (Maeve Higgins) is a driving instructor - she's just not very good
at it. True, she can talk to ghosts and has other paranormal talents, but
she's rather annoyed by them, especially after what happened to her dad
(Risteard Cooper).
Martin (Barry Ward) is a single parent trying to raise his daughter
Sarah (Emma Coleman) while constantly arguing with his nagging, deceased
wife - so much so that he asks Rose for an exorcism. Rose flat out turns
him down at first, but is eventually suckered into it, also because she
feels drawn to Martin. However, her methods are somewhat unorthodox and
questionable even.
Christian (Will Forte) is a rock star who had one big hit back in the
day and tries to find his way back to superstardom ever since. So now he
has struck a deal with the devil - and he charms Rose into helping him
under a false pretext ... and soon enough, he has picked Martin's daughter
as his virgin sacrifice - which means Martin turns to Rose once more,
since his daughter can't stop levitating - which ultimately results in a
wacky race to save Sarah and put an end to Christian's evil deeds ...
Extra Ordinary might not be extraordinary in the true sense of
the word - but it's great fun, a loveably wacky blend of situation and
slapstick comedy and paranormal horror. And while some of the humour might
be a bit blunt, the film shows a genuine love for both its story and its
story's genre roots, and seems to take great joy in playing with horror
mainstays. And add to that an ensemble cast who's really in on the joke
but put their straightest faces to it, and you've got a piece of fun
entertainment, a film that ought to play very well at parties.
