In a post-nuclear World, racecar-gladiator Flash (Michael Sopikow)
gets the job of finding the only fertile woman worldwide in bombed-out
New York & get her out of their for the future of the human race. To
help him (& to control him of course) the American president (Edmund
Purdom), has him accompanied by 2 crooks, Bronx (Paolo
Maria Scalondro) & Ratchet (Romano
Puppo), who ably help him to get into New York, which is
guarded by the evil Eurakian army (lead by Anna
Kanakis). Once there, they not only have to fight the
Eurakians, though, but also degenerates, mutants & of course rats,
but manage to free both Kirk (Louis
Ecclesia), a dwarf, & beautiful Akaya (Valentine
Monnier), who Flash promptly falls in love with. However, soon Flash,
Akaya & Bronx are caught by the Eurakians & Flash can only buy
some time when he convinces their leader that 'Akaya is the last fertile
woman - & it's just time enough for Ratchet & Kirk to device a
plan to save them, even if Bronx has to die in the process. Once
having shaken the Eurakian warriors of their trail though, our heroes
are by no way safe, as they are soon picked up by Big Ape (George
Eastman) & his mutant tribe, & though Big Ape does offer them
hospitality after some initial fights, it soon becomes clear he has an
agenda of his own, as he wants the fertile woman (who's yet to be found)
for himself to live on through his off-spring. Finally, Kirk leads
Flash, Ratchet, Akaya & Big Ape to the woman, Melissa, who has been
in a coma ever since the desaster that started the mutations in the
first place & is thus uninfected, & our group even devices a
plan to escape together, as they build an armoured car to break through
the Eurakian defenses, but in the end most of them are killed, Kirk when
he lures the Eurakian guards away from our heroes' hide-out, Big Ape
when he protects Melissa's life with his body, for after a rape she now
carries his child, Akaya is shot by Ratchet, while Ratchet, who turns
out to be an evil android from the American government, is put off-line
by Flash. Flash on the other hand, is disillusioned even more than he
was before the affair, but nevertheless he has chosen to board a spaceship to
another planet to - with Melissa & a handful of other chosen ones - start the human race anew. For some reason, in the early 80's
- faced with a changing market & the advent of home video - Italian
film production companies by & large lost faith in creating original
products & seemed content to base their movies on popular American
successes (e.g. Escape from New York - which this movie very
obviously was based on - or Conan the Barbarian, Star Wars,
Alien, Terminator, Mad Max
2: Road Warrior, ...),
remade on a shoestring budget. Understandably, many directors - some of
them had been in the business 10 to 20 years & did work on some
decent films with decent cast - felt less than flattered about being
reduced to shoot a film after a blueprint without even having enough
money let alone a decent cast to do just that. The lack of conviction
for the product often becomes plainly visible in these movies - as it
does in this one -, & overall, yes, the movies are rather bad. At
the same time though, some - & 2019: Dopo la caduta di New York
is one of them - manage to be entertaining in a trashy way. |
