In the not too distant future, the world's overrun by zombies but
humankind has managed to survive but has reverted to a more primitive
lifestyle: Rory (Lily Sullivan) has lost her daughter (Bonnie Filer) to a
zombie, her husband (Travis Luke) no less who as a doctor was on the front
line fighting the virus. That was two years ago, since then she has lived
in relative security with her father-in-law Otto (Richaard Roxburgh), the
only relative left to her, but also in isolation only occasionally
disturbed by the locl militia that's shooting zombies and drifters alike
in an attempt to herd all survivors into a camp they control. Eventually,
down by the river, Rory finds such a driver, Noah (Lance Giles), and
seeing he's badly wounded, she brings him home to treat him, despite
Otto's safety concerns. From Noah, Rory learns that he has only left his
village to go to the next city to salvage a pharmacy for some anti-zombie
medicine, as bhis son has recenlly been bitten but can still be saved if
he gets the medicine on time. This story of course resonates with Rory
because of the story with her daughter and she decides to help the still
ailing Noah to get the medicine to his boy, even if that means to leave
her relative safety behind - maybe forever, as militia leader Logan
(Callan Mulvey) has made it his priority to hunt Rory and noah down at any
cost ... Now sure, by definition this is a zombie movie, but both in
story and execution it feels more like a existentialist western: The
film's convlict is pretty much whittled down to its bown, it doesn't waste
its time on backstory but concentrates on the film's main concept,
features many a shoot-out, fight and chase, at times even on horseback,
and it makes perfect use of its outside locations. Now add to this a very
decent cast, and you've got a cool genre film - just beware, this isn't in
any way or form a feelgood movie, this one's bleak even for a zombie
flick.
