The Old West: Belle (Lisa Barnes) and Cole (Beau Yotti) are
both accomplished bounty hunters whose paths have so far never crossed -
that is until now, when they each capture one of the Wolf-brothers
(William Chandler, Keith Lopez) and now feel themselves forced to split
the reward, something neither of them is particularly fond of. However,
the local Sheriff's (Mark Speno) is on the payroll of local richman and
crook Clayton (John Marrs), so the brothers are out the very next day and
want to have their revenge on Belle - and Cole shoots them both dead to
save her - much to the dismay of Clayton, who soon enough calls in the
Eastener (Sky C. Donovan), the best hitman of the West. Not he's
perfect bait for Belle and Cole, for her for the bounty to collect, for
him because of personal reasons - so it's hardly surprising that they
stumble each other more than once during the proceedings but decide on an
uneasy truce. But then Clayton proposes to Belle to bring Cole in alive
for a sizeable amount, and of course her interest is piqued .. Now
this is not a film that invents the western genre anew, nor does it try to
go the epic routeto follow the footsteps of the genre classics. Instead it
tells a smaller scale story akin of the B-westerns of old from independent
producers or poverty row studios like
Monogram
or PRC - if
updated for modern audiences of course -, meaning instead of going for
scope and grandeur, this film tries to make do with whaat's available,
scales things down to limited locations and characters, and builds a
gripping story out of what's available. And the film is welcomely charming
about this, creating a fun yet stringent hodgepodge out of genre
tropes involving many a shoot-out and chase and even a (somewhat
predictable) romance. In a word, good western entertainment for sure.
