Conor (Conor Sweeney) is a guy who's pretty much as dull as they come - not so much that he wants to be, there's just not an exciting bone in his body - much to the dismay of his sculptor girlfriend Kritina (Kristy Wordsworth), while his boss Mr. Buechler (Adam Brooks) is mighty pleased though, as this makes Conor the perfect wage slave. Then though, Kristina leaves on a business trip over the weekend, leaving the house in Conor's care, and he, determined to do something exciting, calls a freak hotline - that leaves him with three demon - Frankie Freako (voiced by Matthew Kennedy), Boink (Adam Brooks) and Dottie (Meredith Sweeney) - who wreck utter chaos, destroy all of Kristina's sculptures and boobytrap the place just to spite Conor - who has a major freak-out before realizing the only way to outfreak the freaks is to play their game. And Conor actually manages to ultimately befriend them. Then though more demons arrive and take them to another dimension, Freako World, where Conor, Frankie Freako and his friends have to face off against the freakiest of them all, Freako World's new ruler Munch (Rich Evans), who has a knack for executions, and as it happens, Frankie Freako and company are on top of his list ...

Frankie Freako is a film that seems to have fallen out of time, as in anything it looks like a Charles Band production for Empire and later Full Moon from the 1980s or 90s - think Troll, Ghoulies, Demonic Toys or Puppetmaster here -, and that Conor's boss is named after effects wizard John Carl Buechler, who was involved with many of these movies certainly is no coincidence here. What this ultimately means is this is an over-the-tiop piece of horror with its comedy level up high without hitting the moronic, with primarily practical special effects (including handpuppet creatures) that actually look pretty decent even if they lean into the bizarre at times, and a directorial effort that sees a limited budget not exactly as a limitation for imagination. The result is ... frankly wonderful for all fans of these films of old, but it's also a film that manages to hold its own on its own merits alone, and thus a fun genre ride.

Frankie Freako is to be released on digital in the UK and Ireland on July 14th, 2025.
