Ava (Ayla Demirci) has everything to become a pop star, she's got the
voice, she's got the looks, and her song are just the middle-of-the-road
kind of catchy and un-edgy to reach a mainstream audience. Well, she has
got everything but industry contacts. T´hat is, until she meets Renzo
(Ricky Burchell), super producer for just the impersonal r'n'b Ava'scut
out for, and who makes her sing for him ... and he falls in love, and
pretty much promises her to make her a superstar right on the spot. Of
course she says yes, as this is all Ava has ever dreamed of. And when I
say he falls in love, I mean he falls in love with her body, and soon
enouch the two become an item. And Ava seen feels flattered about this,
and at the same time totally overlooks that Renzo has ditched his last
girlfriend (Alexandra Sanchez), like her a star just waiting to break out,
just to be with (or rather have sex with) her. Anyways, her album is only
weeks from being released, so what harm could a little denial do to Ava
compared to this? Well, the denial comes in Amara (Britney Saysombath),
Enzo's new next superstar for whom he's prepared to drop Ava like a hbot
potato. And when she complains, he drugs her, takes her to a htoel - and
before long, a sex tape starring her is all over the internet ...
Now of course, the film's title Freak Off is based on ta
lurid (and proven in court detail of the case of one Sean Combs aka Puff
Daddy aka Diddy aka Diddle-dee-dee aka
nobody-cares-anymore-about-rappers'-random-name-changes, a mediocre rapper
whose main claim to fame is bastardizing The Police's brilliant
Every Breath You Take turned even more mediocre but successful
music producer and convicted pimp. wjo has forced his respective
protegées/girlfriends to having gangbangs he would film for extortion
purposes - and this film was released no three weeks before that man's
real life conviction.
That said, if you expect anything too lurid from Freak Off
you'll probably be disappointed, this is certainly no porn recreation of
the story (even if such a film might very well be out there, I haven't
checked), and is actually very tame in its representation of sexual
situations. Instead the film's a rather heart-felt drama with a
#MeToo backbone, and as such a film that really hits a nerve with
contemporary audiences, thanks not so much to its sensationalistic premise
but to its clever script and very capable cast - and as such the film's a
worthwhile watch for sure .... even if, I have to be onest, the film's
music is pretty much af forgettable as - well, the rapper with the
pointless name changes would like it to be, so pretty accurate in a way.
