Gangsters Fat Man (Johnny Brown) and Rabbit (Billy Barty) summon the
ghost of crimelord Big Al (Larry Storch) from the beyond to steal them the
invaluable Maltese Monkey from the local museum. But when there are ghosts
involved, this is a job for the Ghost Busters, Jack Kong (Forrest Tucker),
Spenser (Larry Storch again) and Tracy the gorilla (Bob Burns). And since
it just so happens that Spenser is the splitting image of Big Al, he
decides to pose as Big Al and have Kong and Tracy pretend to be his
gorillas. Then though Big Al assumes his original place again and has Kong
and Tracy believe he's Spenser, and then he uses them to help him steal
the Maltese Monkey. All this eventually leads to a lot of chasing around
before Big Al the ghost can be sent back to the beyond via the Ghost
Busters special machine, and the evil deeds of Fat Man and Rabbit are
stopped short by an expertly thrown bowling ball. A rather
crude slapstick sitcom with supernatural undercurrents that is somehow too
simplistic to work on a narrative level, too childish to be properly
funny, and too old fashioned in direction and delivery of jokes even for
the 1970's ... and all of these shortcomings make it almost amusing - even
if for the wrong reasons - and endearing. But in all honesty, lowered
expectations help to enjoy this ...
