Young Mai (Maria Yanagisawa) has gone missing a month ago, with no clue
that might lead to her - now her best friend Misaki (Chikako Sykuragi) and
her boyfriend Wataru (Hiroshi Temaki) each recieve an image of a forest
she's supposed to be at via their cellphone ... and they decide to go
there and look for her.
Before long, they have found the right spot, but no Mai ... only the
image on their cellphones now shows Mai hiding in the background - where
she definitely wasn't before. The two kids realize there is something
creepy going on, and when they go deeper into the forest to investigate
further, they stumble upon a rundown building that's actually scientist
Ryo's (Atsuko Rukawa) lab where she brings ghosts back from the land of
the dead ... and eventually, she brings Mai's ghost back - which
unfortunately proves that Mai is dead. But Mai's spirit is a vengeful one,
so Misaki and Wataru make a hasty escape. Then though Misaki learns why
Mai's spirit is so vengeful - she has been killed by Wataru, who hears
voices in his head that drive him to kill people ... and it seems Misaki
is next when Mai's spirit intervenes and kills Wataru for revenge.
More and more ghosts appear eventually, and it seems that Misaki is no
longer able to leave the forest which now seems to stretch forever, so
Misaki makes another escape, this time back to Ryo's lab, but the
news Ryo has are rather disquieting: The ghosts she summoned have taken
over her computer that controls the summoning and now summon spirits from
the land of the dead indiscriminately until the ghosts have overrun the
world. Misaki and Ryo have just enough time to lock themselves into the
isolation chamber, perhaps the only room in the whole world that spirits
can't enter, then though Ryo decides to leave the isolation chamber again
to switch off the system ... but she doesn't return, and for days Misaki
is locked up in the isolation chamber waiting in terror.
Suddenly the door opens, and when Misaki leaves, the ghosts are all
gone, and Misaki is able to leave the forest and return home ... when she
realizes the whole world is overrun by spirits who now run everything
...
On the plus side, the film is quite atmospherically directed and a
short running time (ca 75 minutes) ensures it doesn't overindulge in its
subject. That said, the whole plot of thze film is just too silly to
really impress, and some forced plottwists (like when Wataru turns into
his girlfriend's killer) don't help the film one bit.
Granted, there are far worse films on the market, and at times Ghost
System is actually kind of entertaining, but it's definitely nothing
to write home about.
