Small town, USA, the early 1960's: Likeable car mechanic and hot rodder
Chase (Brian Gross) seems to have everything, the best wheels in town,
beautiful girlfriend Lisa (Madeline Voges), is respected by everyone, and
the only things he has to worry about is the constant attempts to harrass
him by rogue hot rodder Waco Bob (Jesse Janzen) and the avances of Bob's
hot girlfriend Carla (Christina DeRosa) - but both is managable. But then
townspeople start to just disappear, as if picked out of their cars while
driving, including the local deputy (Kelli Maroney), which leaves the
sheriff (Terence Knox) just clueless, and since Chase drives the only tow
truck in town to collect the abandoned cars, he gets involved ... to find
out the missing drivers were actually attacked by a giant gila monster -
about the size of an airplane and able to withstand train crashes
unscathed -, a monster that's about to take to Chase's hometown. Now
fortunately, Chase's boss (Rich Komenich) has enough weapons and
explosives in the back of his shop to start a small scale war, and he's
more than willing for Chase and the Sheriff to make use of them. But is a
small scale war enough to stop a giant gila monster? Basically
a remake of the 1959 drive-in cult classic The
Giant Gila Monster (an at least in my view not too great movie), Gila!
is a surprisingly entertaining movie in its own right, as it pays loving
respect to the era and the tone of the original without getting sappy or
moronic, its CGI effects, while not in every instant convincing (CGI
effects rarely are), are organically integrated into the story.
Furthermore, the whole thing flows incredibly smoothly, has its bits of
horror, humour, romance, drama, and action in all the right spots, plus,
one just can't help but love the vintage cars in the film! Genre fans
are sure to love this!
