Teenaged Brandon (John Owen Lowe) has drifted off into a life of drugs,
ever since his mother has died, which is why his well-to-do dad Winston
(Andrew McCarthy) has pretty much forced him to go into rehab - though
given Brandon's unwillingness, success might not exactly be in the books.
However, on their way to the facility, they are held up by a bunch of
thugs led by Luther (Sean Carrigan), and Winston's shot in the stomach and
killed. Brandon though has managed to film the murder and then make a
daring escape. But Luther and company are in hot pursuit, knowing the
video Brandon has taken mustn't reach the authorities. Brandon though is a
city boy and survival in the open country comes with its challenges to
him. Fortunately though he meets veteran Cutter (Jim Parrack), who knows
the area like the back of his hand. And while Cutter might not be the most
sociable man, he also knows right from wrong and thus agrees to take
Brandon safely to the facility. But on their way they cross paths with
Sophie (Harlan Drum), a girl Brandon has met and flirted with at a gas
station a few miles back, and she offers her assistant - not letting in of
course that she's in league with Luther ...
One thing up front, the "surprise" twist ending of
this movie (and no spoilers here) is a bit of a let-down, especially since
it's highly predictable and a bit clichéed by the mid 2020s even. That
hardly detracts from the enjoyment though that Grace Point is as a
whole, a fast paced action thriller that's nevertheless character-centered
and provides all the leads with their individual arcs, that's well
directed with an emphasis on atmosphere - also helped by the impressive
locations of course -, and that's carried by strong performances by all
involved. Maybe not a masterpiece, but good, even thoughtful entertainment
nevertheless.
