Murray (Gunther Grambo) hasn't been quite the same since his wife has
died - since then, he lives as a recluse in his remote cabin by the lake,
has turned to praying a lot, is neglecting his work at his garage, has to
a degree turned his back on his daughter Lisa (Tracey Kane), and the only
one who brings him joy is his granddaughter Megan (Alexandra Kane), who he
babysits for single working mom Lisa a lot. People actually start to worry
about Murray, thinking him living alone can't be good for his well-being -
but he claims he's not alone, he has his "girls", which everyone
takes for a figment of his imagination, some sort of self denial ... but
it's true, Murray has a beautiful girl in his cabin most of the time,
mostly naked ... and chained to the floor. The latest one is Kelly
(Jessica Moore), whom he has caught shouting expletives at her boyfriend
(Christian Rozakis) in front of Megan and cursing the Lord ... which was
simply too much for his Christian ears, so he made sure her car broke down
and he could ride in as her saviour - and take her captive, to get her
back onto the righteous path and thus save her soul. And if that means
stripping and whipping her, if it means to torture her physically and
mentally - well, then Murray can't help it, it's the will of the Lord.
Thing is, not everybody might share Murray's ideas that he did the work of
the Lord would they find out. And since Meghan is around grandpa's place a
lot, it's probably only a matter of time until she stumbles over naked and
beaten Kelly ... Now I have to admit, I'm not sure whether or
not my review makes Grandpa's Psycho sound a little moronic - but
actually the film's not at all a comedy but a serious thriller with
extremely macabre undercurrents. And it's a very well-made thriller, too,
that not only tells a highly original (and deeply twisted) story, it also
tells it in a very original way, relying not so much on straight
storytelling but on flashbacks and -forwards to - actually tell its story
in a very straight way, if you catch all the associations. Plus, the
film's definitely an actors' movie, giving all its strong leads strong
characters and room to shine, shocking with the characters' subtleties
rather than all-out violence. Really a pretty good movie!
