Now when Sammy (Julie Chang) scores an interview with Lisa (Malina Pauli
Weissman), she figures she has hit the jackpot - and heck, who can blame
her, after all, teenaged Lisa is the only one who has survived the killing
spree of the backwoods slasher known as the Hermit (Lou Ferrigno), a
mother-fixated mass murderer who has turned the flesh of his victims into
beef jerky that has been sold at local businesses, a killer that has
killed both Lisa's dad (James Quattrochi) and her boyfriend (Anthony
Turpel) among many others. Only when Sammy interviews Lisa, she finds
holes in her story, holes that contradict the publicly accepted story of
her ordeal - and disturbingly so ... Now I will say, this movie's
third act reveal is pretty ingenious as it takes the film in a totally new
direction - and that said, the first two acts seem to play it safe, almost
appear like a paint-by-numbers affai ... and this might sound harsh I
admit, thing is though the movie's just so good at it, it's surprisingly
entertaining while navigating over-familiar territory, as it doesn't take
itself too seriously, handles both its suspense and jump scares well, and
goes for atmosphere over spectacle, so it's one of these rare cases where
the familiar actually feels fresh again. Plus, the casting of Lou
Ferrigno's welcomely inventive of course, and he's supported by a very
solid cast, all helping to make this one pretty brilliant genre ride.
