Wben Mariya (Jelena Uchev) and Dimitri (Aidan Everly) met at a club, it
was love at first sight for both of them, and they then spent the night
together - only for Dimitri to be gone the very next day. That was 15
years ago, back in Russia, Mariya has since moved to the US with her 14
year old son Roman (Brocagh Lynn), and has become a hitwoman - which means
they have to constantly be on the move which in turn meand Roman hasn't
found any opportunity to find any friends - which is why, when he meets 16
year old store clerk Lennon (Reese Grove), a girl who actually talks to
him, he tries to impress her at all cost, even if that means revealing his
secret talent to her, a kind of telemagnetic power that helps him picking
up things from afar. Now Lennon is properly impressed, as one would be,
and they spend the afternoon together and get really close - but then the
day culminates in Lennon stealing her mother's (Mae Burrus) car with the
help of Roman's special powers, and the two rushing off to God knows
where, an escape that*s cut short by Lennon hitting a tree, and she's
killed upon impact while Roman gets out of the car, safe and sound but
heart-broken - which is when a rift in time opens, and going through it
would enable Roman to save Lennon. And this is when Dimitri, who turns out
to be a time-travelling assassin, finally turns up again, trying to
prevent Roman from stepping through that rift as it would destroy the
universe. But what are the chances of Roman listening to his father who
had abanconed him and his mother 15 years ago? Inertia
sure enough is a pretty unique film, as on one hand it's a coming-of-age
story of the first love variety, all the embarrassing pratfalls included,
but then it's also science fiction somehow reminiscent of
Doctor Who, and there
are also scenes of full-blown comedy - especially a scene where Mariya,
Dimitry, Roman and Lennon all meet up in a diner is just priceless in this
category. Now this mix means that te film at times feels disjointed - but
in a way I feel this was intentional even because it goes hand in hand
with the mystery the narrative builds up, that would be spoiled if things
were revealed too soon. So the result is a film that's a bit difficult to
follow at times, but sitting through it sure enouch is a worthwhile
experience.
