Several members of the medical profession have been called in by
mysterious Dr. Graves (Laurence R. Harvey) for ... even they don't know
why, they just feel compelled to come ...
- There's self-righteous Dr.Helberson (Michael Daviot), who just wanted to test the nerves of a student
(Dorian Todd) of his by locking him in for the night with a corpse to
test his sanity - to very worrying results ...
- There's terminally ill nurse Charlotte (Megan Tremethick), who has
volunteered to work at the death wing of the hospital because she
figures they might find a cure for her condition there - only to
realize the doctor in charge (Jonathan Hansler) has gone off the deep
end quite some time ago ...
Veteran genre actress Jane Merrow plays
the hospital's matron in this one.
- And then there's doctors Hawyer (Nich Ford) and Mayley (Lawrie
Brewster), who in their attempts to find the key to eternal life have
teamed up with medical madman Mannering (Adam Barnett) - and now reap
the bitter fruit of that seed ...
If you're bringing a storied studio like
Amicus back,
you better do it in style - and that's exactly what In the Grip of
Terror does, presenting its audience with the studio's first
omnibus movie since The Monster Club some 45 years
earlier - and this is a film that doesn't miss a beat when it comes to
reviving that format of old, as the film presents the audience with a trio
of self.contained stories with pulpy roots and a strong focus on the
madabre and the customary surprise ending, which might seem rather
old-fashioned in approach perhaps but fresh in storytelling an execution.
And thanks to a directorial stong on vusiauls but not fortetting on
characters, and a very solid ensemble cast, this has turned out to be a
very pleasant horror experience for sure.
