After the death of both Annalisa*s (Annie Sullivan) fiancé/father of her
unborn baby and her father Robert (Jim Long), she and her mother Emily
(Alanna Hamill Newton) decide to move back into the small town Emily grew
up in, into the house of her long-deceased parents. They think a little
peace and quiet will do them both good - but peace and quiet seems to be
the last thing they're getting, as Emily soon thinks she hears Robert's
voice, finds his clothes she didn't even bring in the dryer, stumbles
across his boots covered in fresh mud and so on. Annalisa sends her to the
local psychiatrist, who doesn't do anything other than to put her on some
medication though, medication that does nothing for her. So Annalisa
decides to look for a different approach and buys a book on the paranormal
from local bookseller and love interest to be Dillon (Brad Adams) - a book
whe feels weirdly drawn to even if she doesn't believe in the occult, a
book that the local reverend (Kelcey Watson), a generally very open man,
tells her is evil. Annalisa keeps digging though, and eventually finds out
that her parents were the only two survivors of a massacre that has
happened a few months before she was born, and the killer in question was
dad's jealous ex (Lily Workman), who might or might not have her hands in
the occult. To find out more about the affair, Annalisa questions the
still shell-shocked cop (Philip Paz) who apprehended the girl - and what
she finds out is not quite what she wnted to hear, including that despite
her having been unborn she might be more involved in the story than she
would have ever wanted to ...
Now I give you that, for most of its first and second act, the film
moves a tad slow, is more interested in establishing the scene than in
exciting its audience - but at least the film is good at that, presenting
up with engaging characters, portrayed by a strong cast, in relatable
situations, However, it's the pay-off that really makes this all worth the
while, one that seems to come out of nowhere while it has in fact been
carefully led up to, and that turns everything on its head while
delivering suspense in buckets. So in all, this film might require a
little bit of patience, but richly rewards said patience in the end.
