Recently orphaned pre-teen siblings Avila, Autumn and little Scarlet
(Schmidt) have just blown another chance to be adopted, so to brighten
themselves up they decide to sneak out of their house and spend a day on
the beach without their carer (Melba Novoa) having the first idea about
it. This goes reasonably well until the surf drags them on a surfboard out
onto the open sea. Of course, panic soon sets in - but then they get to an
island ... which consists of little more than a rock riddled with caves on
the sea level and a lighthouse, and it's populated by hundreds of sea
lions. Thing is, the girls make landfall at in one of the caves, and from
there to the lighthouse is long and perilous. Plus, (not only) for little
girls sea lions are giant and frightening creatures ... It's
not often that films about little girls going on adventures get it as
right as this movie does - and the reasons for this are manyfold: For one,
the little girls are portrayed just like little girls are - sure they're
cute and innocent, but they're also anarchistic, at times mischievous, as
inexperienced as irresponsible, and sometimes even silly. But other than
that the film also profits from pretty cool photography, including some
breathtaking underwater scenes, and a rather accurate portrayal of nature
as something rough and unforgiving. Plus some quite cool action keeps
things interesting throughout, and the scenes of the girls with the sea
lions are actually breathtaking. Frankly, given the film's premise, this
one's a lot better than I could have even hoped for.
