In a few thousand years from now, society is entirely split into the elite
and the slum-dwellers - but for the elite to not degenerate, slum-dwellers
are to compete against one another at the age of 18 to see who has the
change to make the jump to the other eschelons. And today, the fight is
Manius (Alexos Carabas) against his oldest and best friend Chrismus (Daniel
Barabat). Manius doesn't see Chrismus as much of a challenge, after all,
he has always been stronger then him, faster, and better in maths - so
whatever the challenge, he's likely to succeed over his friend. But that
chllenge proves to be neither combat nor simple problem-solving but
answering to a simple question, "is this all there is to it," and while
Manius answers what's in the textbook without batting an eye, Chrismus
questions the question, baffling everybody but especially the powers that
be ... Now bearing in mind that this movie's a mere 6 minutes
long, it achieves along in such a short time, world-building, telling an
actual story and asking a philosophical question that despite the film's
sci+fi setting hits the mark in the here and now as well. And all of this
works because filmmaker Alan Keith Davis doesn't over-fraught the film on
any level, the sets are barebone enough (and quite atmospheric) to suggest
the far future without relying on genre clichés, the story
concentrates on simple (not simplistic) characters and motivations, and
the philosophical level is only introduced late and not with a
sledgehammer. So in all, this is a film that will make you think - but
that will entertain at the same time, and for that it's defintely woth a
watch.
