Karen (Jasmine Flores) has one goal in her live, she wants to become a
beauty queen - and she sure is pretty enough to achieve this and knows how
to pose, she has just one problem: Her totally unlikable personality - she
lacks charm, she lacks empathy, and she always talks from a position of
privilege. So her "career! as beauty queen contestant doesn't make her any
money, in fact it costs quite a bit, a tab she leaves to her husband Ted
(Scott Bolger) to pick up, which he does only reluctantly. Then though,
Michelle (Saint Nikole), the girl who beat her to Miss Yonkers, is found
killed, which promotes her to Miss Yonkers and sets her on a path for an
actual career. Not long after, Ted is arrested for killing Michelle - but
Karen doesn't show the last bit of sympathy or anything, even if he's done
it for her, she's very happy to let him rot in jail. She has learned one
valuable lesson from this though: If in doubt, kill the competition - and
gorily so ...
Now one thing up front, Karen: The Beauty Queen Butcher
isn't the most subtle of films - but with a blunt title like this, if
you've expecteed much in terms of subtlety,, then the joke's on you
really. And speaking of jokes, this movie is actually pretty funny - now
sure the murders are all pretty brutal and played out to full gory effect,
but they're often (especially in the finale) used more as punchlines
rather than for their shock value, plus Jasmine Flores in the lead shows
genuine comedic talent making her character as despicable as she does, and
she's helped by a cast clearly in on the joke. So if you want your horror
in the darkly comedic vein, this is clearly the film for you.
