Maddie (Virginia Gardner) has never been quite since her boyfriend (Isaac
Crawley) has been shot dead in a robbery right before her very eyes - and
one can't really blame her. So a year or so later her best friend Trish
(Mel Jarnson) decides to invite her to a trip to an island paradise to see
some orcas. Maddie is thrilled as they're her favourite creatures. But
once there she's less than thrilled to learn that Trish meant watching
them in captivity. So instead of watching a show, she, Trish and Trish's
local crush Josh (Mitchell Hope) try to break into the seaquarium one
after a night of drinking - but fail to make it past the security guard
(Ron Smyck). Next day, the three of them are making a trip to some remote
beach, but are ultimately attacked by a killer whale who kills Josh, sinks
the jet-ski they're on, and the girls only just manage to save themselves
onto a rock. in open water And the orca's circling the rock, waiting to
kill them as well. This is so out of character with orcas in their natural
habitat as orcas are only known to kill humans in captivity - so the girls
figure this must be one of the killer whales they tried to save that must
have been rescued by someone else, but the orca still thinks its in
captivity and the girls are its handlers. Now that's bad enough already,
made only worse by Trish shattering their unity by confessing something to
Maddie about her dead boyfriend ...
This film actually manages to achieve the almost impossible as it is an
animal horror flick that delivers an animal advocacy message. And this
works so well because the film puts narration over message and tells a
trhilling and, considering it's mostly located on a single rock with only
two actresses, surprisingly multi-layered story that goesway beyond just
being straightforward horror. And that the main actresses have just the
right chemistry for this and are first rate only helps making this a
rather brilliant genre ride.
