Author and filmmaker Bruce G. Hallen beck needs no introduction in the
indie horror community for his output in the 1990s and early 2000s that's
mostly fondly remembered. The Kinderhook Creature isn't about that aspect
of the man though but about his encounters with the paranormal growing up
in Kinderhook in the Hudson Valley, historically one of the first areas of
the USA the white immigrants built their settlements, and an area
particularly ripe with otherworldly encounters. And
documentaary filmmaker uses his usual care when, based on Hallenbeck's
book The Kinderhook Creature and Beyond: A Personal Reminiscence
he interviews the man himself as well as other locals about their
paranormal experiences, these ranging from ghosts to a "white blob" to
UFOs and of course the local variation of
Bigfoot,
without Breedlove, personally not much of a doubter, ever taking anything
just at face value but rather interested in recording oral history than
landing a "scoop" - and that's what makes tthis film so interesting
(besides Hallenbeck as a gifted orator that is), it doesn't try to prove
anything, it rather makes Hudson Valley paranormal vibes palpable to the
audience (also via atmospheric filmmaking) and drags one into the story
whether one's a believer or not.
