The Kybalion is a book published by occultist William Walker
Atkinson in 1908 that's based on the Hermetic Philosophy of ancient Egypt
and Greece, and that suggests everything is connected with everything, and
not just on our plane of existence, but through all different but parallel
realities. This philosophy is based on seven principles, the principle of
mentalism, of correspondence, of vibration, of polarity, of rhythm, of
cause and effect, and of gender. And while some of these principles are
pretty easy to grasp even for people like me not at all versed in
occultism, others are harder to get - so this documentary doesn't just
rely on Atkinson's texts that were pretty much preaching to the converted,
but presents the audience with a contemporary expert for each of the
principles, a psychic (Paula Roberts, an alchemist (Brian Cotnoir), a
medium (Lauren Thibodeau), a researcher (Raymond Moody), a hypnotist (Daniel
Ryan), a tarot reader (Laetitia Barbara), and an astrrologer (Micki
Pellerano), to bridge the gap of more than a century and align the ideas
of the book with more modern variants of them. Now for someone
not at all in tune with the occult, supernatural, paranormal or whatever
you want to call it, at first the film seems to be a bit overwhelming in
its wealth of information - but it's pretty level-headed in its
presentation of ideas, doesn't try to convince one of whatever it is and
instead presents things in a sober manner, and even the interviewees
mostly seem down-to-earth to make this relatable to even sceptics like
myself. And in its few staged sequences this movie sure shows a visual
richness rare to documentaries of its kind, making this a worthy watch
after all.
