Being stage manager on a play about Abraham Lincoln, n on-binary Taffeta
(Roger Q. Mason) has a rrather thankless job, a situation that really
culminates when the actor playing Lincoln (Ted Rooney) tries to rape them.
Now Taffeta has nobody to come home to and their life revolves mostly
around the theatre, so they start to fantasize about the real Abraham
Lincoln (Pete Ploszek), then still a lawyer, who has developed a soft spot
for army sergeant Elmer (Alex Esola), so much so that he persuades him to
quit service and join him in his law firm - but that's not only because he
appreciates him as a person, he also longs for him bodily, and vice versa,
and soon they start a sexual relationship, much to the dismay of Lincoln's
wife (like most supporting cast in Taffeta's fantasy played by Roger Q.
Mason) , who doesn't know anything for certain but suspects aplenty. And
yet, Elmer doesn't stray from Lincoln's side, to the extent that he
re-enters the army when Lincoln is elected president - to ultimately wind
up the very first casualty of the Civil War ... Now if you're an admirer of the pretty much mythologized, almost
saint-like Abraham Lincoln as he is usually presented in media, then this
is not a film for you, as Lincoln is presented here as a deeply flawed and
self-righteous career person, and really not a very nice but deeply human
man - who also happened to be bi-sexual.. Of course one can also argue
(and that's pretty much my opinion) that this finally makes a palpable
character out of Lincoln, someone who's relatable for his shortcomings. And
that the other two main characters are as fleshed out as Lincoln himself
and all three are played by very vompetent actors really works for the
movie, as does its directorial approach that plays out large parts of the
story on the stage of the play within a play, where the three leads
interact in often unusual ways, including repeated breaking of the fourth
wall as Taffeta alternates between participant and audience quite a bit.
Now all of this makes for a very fascinating watch that one's not likely
to forget any time soon.
