Guy (Zach McLain) is living a very lonely life, especially since his
room- and workmate Jim (Eric Halverson) is hanging out with his girlfriend
(Carolyn Lyons) most of the time. But Jim has pity on his roomie, and thus
takes him to the beach to meet new people, and maybe a girl even - and it
works out much better than expected, Guy meets Roxie (Amber DeRuyter), and
the two are attracted to one another from the get-go, and they also share
many interests and have the same sense of humour. But after a very nice
day together, they're separated by chance before they've even had a chance
to exchange their contact information. Thing is, Guy has fallen seriously
in love with the girl, so he leaves no stone unturned to find her - but
the longer he's unsuccessful with this, the more frustrated he gets, to a
point where he starts having nightmares, leaving him nothing short of
losing grip of reality ...
On the surface, Lonesome sure has all the earmarks of a
romantic comedy, but it's hardly your typical genre movie, and fortunately
doesn't feel like one at all, as it's full of absurd elements, hommages to
silent and new wave cinema, with even a musical number thrown in while
constantly ignoring the genre formula - and a result is a very accessible,
relatable film, where the characters, even in the film's most stylized
scenes, feel real - also of course thanks to a solid cast - and the story,
despite the unlikely reveal at the end, feels very grounded, making this a
pretty entertaining and pretty engaging movie.
