After being arrested for insurance fraud among other things last
episode, Pellegrini (Hervé Pierre) is quickly let go thanks to
his friends in politics - and to have his revenge on Assane (Omar Sy),
whom he (rightly) suspects of having had him arrested, he sends his hitman
Léonard (Adame Niane) to track him down and kill him. But when Léonard
already aims his gun at Assane, he's strangled to death by Pellegrini's
other hitman Pascal (Nicolas Wanczycki), who upon his escape calls the
police with the sole intent to implicate Assane in the murder - but Assane
gets away just in time. The police of course have a field day searching
Assane's apartment for evidence, and finally detective Guedira (Soufiane
Guerrab) is validated in saying Assane is the modern day Arsène Lupin
- he's just not content, as a murder doesn't fit the literary Lupin's
pattern ... Assane has meanwhile picked up his accomplice, antiques
dealer Ferel (Antoine Gouy), rightly guessing if the police have found out
about him, they'll find out about Ferel in no time, and they hide in a
container in a warehouse they have long furnished for exactly this
purpose. And from there, Assane comments on an article on the internet
Guedira is sure to read with a cryptic message that can only be deciphered
by someone well-versed in the adventures of Arsène Lupin - and thus
Guedira is able to find an USB stick with incriminating evidence against
Pellegrini that's pretty much the last piece in Assane's puzzle. In the
meantime of course, the police have found out about Assane's hiding place,
but arrive too late as Assane and Ferel have made good their escape
through the Paris catacombs ... This is basically just routine
thriller fodder that by and large lacks the elegance in planning of the
literary Arsène Lupin's schemes. True though, Assane does
manage to stay a few steps ahead of the police at all times, but his time
his devices are just half-hearted, and the subplot as how he and Ferel got
to a secret map of the catacombs in their teen years (and played by
Mamadou Haidara and Adrian Valli De Villebonne) is really jarring rather
than enlightening. So not one of the better episodes of the series.
