100 years ago, an ancestor of Santo has beaten a wrestler calles Satan
(Manuel Leal) in the wrestling arena. The wrestler has then made a pact
with the Devil, has been mummified ... and now, a century later, returns
to life to have his revenge on Santo. Only, Santo is nowhere around, so
Satan starts killing people by breaking their necks to attract Santo's
attention ... Satan's killings soon become a big mystery, but the only
one who knows who's behind it is midget museum guide Pinguino (Jorge
Pinguino), and nobody believes him ... nobody but his friend Lina (Elsa
Cardénas), who just happens to be the girlfriend of masked championship
wrestler Mil Máscaras. Mil Máscaras and his tagteam partner Blue Demon
laugh about Pinguino's claims at first as well, but when Satan actually
attacks someone in the wrestling arena and knocks out Blue Demon in the
process, they start believing. However, even they can't prevent Satan
killing Pinguino. Later Satan ambushes Blue Demon, knocks him out
(again), steals his mask and cloths and tells another mummified wrestler
to go out and kill in Blue Demon's disguise, right before the eyes of the
police - and somehow the cops don't figure the obvious, that everybody can
wear Blue Demon's mask and outfit. Anyways, Blue Demon soon becomes a
wanted man, which somehow hampers his investigations, and it's not made
any easier by the fact that Satan has Blue Demon's son Julio (Julio Cesar)
and Mil Máscaras girlfriend Lina kidnapped. Eventually, he even manages
to lure the two wrestlers into a trap, then releases his mummy friends
onto the city. But of course, wrestlers wouldn't be wrestlers if they
couldn't break out of everywhere, and so they do to take on the mummy
hoardes single-handedly. They do well, but mummies don't die easily, so it
seems they fight a losing battle. Then though Santo arrives in his Jaguar
convertible, and after figuring mummies won't yield to muscle power, he
arms himself, Blue Demon and Mil Máscaras with flamethrower-guns and the
three of them burn all of the mummies to a cinder. A mummy
wrestler wanting revenge - now that's a new one, even in the lucha libre
genre. And it can't be denied, the film has its moments of hilarity, but
as a whole it is just too average, neither atmospheric and macabre enough
to convince as a horror film, nor colourful, campy and cheesy enough to
serve as a trash masterpiece. It's still fun for sure, but there are far
better masked wrestler movies out there.
