A Screambox exclusive: Ever simce Ana (Mel Nunes) almost died
in a house fire due to maternal neglect, she's a little bit traumatized.
Ever since, Ana (as an adult played by Marjorie Estiano) has fallen out of
touch with her mother (Chandelly Braz) but has turned her weakness into a
strength and has become an accomplished professional fire fighter). And as
such she and her team (Val Perré, Reynaldo Machado, Rafaél Canedo) are
called to a care home during a torrential rain stormto evacuate its
occupants as the place is essenially falling apart. As they arrive att he
scene, they find the house in worse shape that they had even anticipated,
as the rain's almost washing away the building while they're there - and
yet, the house owner Drika (Ângela Rabello) and her caretaker Ulisses
(Javier Drolas) are reluctant to leave or even let the occupants, many of
them bed-ridden, be evacuated. Ana and company do the right thing though
and at least try to prompt the occumpants to move - only to find out
there's more wrong with the place than they first imagined, and a young
girl, Lia (Maria Volpe) is held there against their will as the occumpants
of the place appear to be nenbers of some dark cult. Now this is bad, but
what's worse is that Ana's colleagues die one by one in accidents, and she
eventually has to face the person she has come to fear the most, her own
thought dead mother ... A Mother's Embrace
isn't a film that
wastes too much time with explanations, doesn't overtalk things, and
doesn't shot much inclination to actually solve its own mystery - and
that's totally one of the film's strengths, as the more the audience is
left in the dark (just like the lead character), the more palpable the
horror of the situation becomes. And add to that a directorial effort
that's heavy on atmosphere and shows a healthy predilection for the
macabre, and a very able cast, and you've got yourself one awesome genre
ride.
