The Bowery Boys - Slip (Leo Gorcey), Sach (Huntz Hall), Bobby (Bobby
Jordan), Whitey (William "Billy" Benedict) and Chuck (David
Gorcey) - have collectively lost their hearts to up-and-coming singer
Gloria (Gale Robbins), so when they learn that she has to put her career
on hold to take care of her ailing mother, they're heartbroken - but also
decide to do something to support her, and their idea is to have Sach
participate in a public prizefight that would make them and thus Gloria
$2,500. Sounds like a good idea apart from the fact that Sach isn't a
boxer, and all the training Slip forces upon him amounts to very little.
But then Slip meets a hypnosist (Ian Keith) who teaches him a trick or
two, and now, using a special coin, Slip manages to turn Sach into a
championship fighter. Thing is, Bull Laguna (Ben Welden), a prominent but
crooked nightclub owner, wants Sach's opponent to win as he has placed a
huge bet on him, and to not lose any money he has hired an actual
championship boxer, Billy (Joe Gray). But even Billy wouldn't stand a
chance against hypnotized Sach. So Bull hires a pickpocket (Danny Beck) to
steal Slip's special coin and a counter-hypnotist (Sammy Cohen) to break
the hypnotic spell. However, Gabe (Gabriel Dell), one of Bull's gang and
Gloria's boyfriend, is hit by his conscience, and he wants to confess
everything to the fight judges - when he's shot and injured. But that
gunshot backfires on Bull and gang, and everything ends happily.
An ultimately pointless and yet pretty amusing comedy that
shows the Bowery Boys' two leads Leo Gorcey and Huntz Hall
in great form, and they're surrounded by a very able supporting cast. And
the final setpiece, the prize fight, while drawn out a bit, features some
really funny ideas. That said, a low budget and bland direction draw the
whole thing down a bit, but it's still good for more than a few laughs.
