Dae-woo (Park Yong-woo), a man in his thirties, has his problems with
girls, so much so that he has never even kissed one, actually. At the
insistence of his friend though, he asks his neighbour Mina (Choi
Kang-hie) out ... but at first the date goes horribly wrong, just because
he is incredibly clumsy around girls. But somehow, she feels as attracted
to him as he feels to her, and finds his klutziness kind of cute, and
before you know it, they have become a couple ... but then desaster
strikes when her ex shows up at her appartment and Dae-woo catches him
walking around her place all naked - which at least needs some explaining.
Dae-woo is devastated and wants to have nothing more to do with her ...
but a few days later she shows up at his doorstep and tells him she has
taken care of her ex - not telling him of course that having taken care
of her ex actually means having killed him. And wouldn't you know it,
Dae-woo and Mina get back together again on the spot. Problem is, Mina's
alcoholic roommate Jang-mee (Jo Eun-ji) grows increasingly annoyed with
her roommate's romance, especially since that means the two of them have
to be living with a corpse in the appartment (none of them has a driving
licence so it's a bit complicated to get the corpse out of town), and
eventually she invites her own bully boyfriend Kye-dong (Jeong Kyeong-ho)
over to stir things up a bit - however, when she passes out on too much
alcohol, Mina gets rid of her ex' corpse with Kye-dong's help (after all
he has a car and a licence to go with it).
In the evening, Dae-woo and Mina have a major row, and it doesn't get
any better by the presence of Kye-dong and Jang-mee, who in her drunken
state drops one hint after the other about the dead ex. Eventually,
Dae-woo leaves enraged, and Mina accidently kills Kye-dong, whose
body she and Jang-mee later get out of town by public transport ...
Eventually, Dae-woo and Mina reconcile yet again, and everything could
be so beautiful ... when Dae-woo finds Mina's ex' cut-off finger in the
fridge. Now he has a private eye investigate her past life, and he finds
out she has killed at least two husbands to get her hands on their
inheritance and who is now only waiting to leave the country for good ...
Dae-woo confronts Mina with her past, but the two still notice they are
in love with each other, even if Dae-woo can't bring himself to leave for
Italy for good with her even if she urges him to. Still, they split on the
best of terms ...
Two years later they meet again in Singapour by pure chance - and
realize one thing: They are still inlove with each other, even if they
will probably never get together again ...
Not a perfect film, My Scary Girl still has its highlights:
starting out as a romantic comedy (and one of the better ones), the film
suddenly takes a rather unexpected turn when the female lead starts
killing people, as if it was nothing actually. Fortunately the film
doesn't make the mistake to pass judgement on the girl but gives the plot
time to develop into rather unexpected directions. And that way, the film
works as a rather light comedy despite of all the killings and rather
macabre details, a comedy that can even afford a (relatively) happy ending
in which the killing girl is not punished for her actions.
Once again, I feel I have to point out this is no masterpiece but an
enjoyable romp that manages to entertain almost througout.
