After long illness, Nigel's (Steven Jobson) mum (Beverly Jacques) sees her
end in grasping distance - but she won't pass on before making Nigel to
promise her on her deathbed to look for a wife. Now Nigel has spent his
last few years taking care of his mother, and he doesn't really know how
to even talk to women, let alone date them, and after his uncle Bob (Keith
Nahon) leads him down a porn rabbit hole that does more harm than good,
Nigel decides to try a dating app, - after all, what could go wrong? The
long and short answer to this: Everything! But sometimes love can be found
where one least expects it ...
Nigel is above all else good fun of course with its
combination of exaggerations, punchlines, sight gags and slapstick, but at
the same time this is a film that has lots of heart, thanks to a
well-written central character brought to life by Steven Jobson's very
relatable performance, a performance that really grounds the often crazy
on-screen goings-on. And a directorial effort that balances out nonsense
and the film's quieter notes only helps making making this a very
entertaining little comedy.
