Ever since the death of her mother, Ranae (Madeline Conway) hasn't been
the same - but still she pushes on and even accepts a job as a babysitter
of a 3 months old. This seems to be the easiest thing in the world, as the
baby's already asleep and according to his parents (David Sapiro, Deanna
Sapiro) not likely to wake up ... and yet something freaks out Ranae
enough to call her best friend Cali (Emmaline Friederichs), who soon
enough shows up with her friend Grace (Carly Rae James Sauer) and Grace's
asshole boyfriend Jeremy (Claudio Parrone jr) - but the latter have more a
party in mind than giving Ranae moral support. Thing is, by the by, they
all have ghostly encounters, and while Ranae is still trying to figure out
what's happening with her brother Ray (Marco Lama), a youngster into
paranormal phenomena she's on videochat with, the ghost starts to pick
Ranae's friend and kills them one by one - and when she and Ray find out
who the ghost might be and what it's after, it might already be too late
... So ok, premise-wise, this movie never veers too far from
the slasher formula, down to using the babysitter clichée complete with
party-crazy teens - but it's cleverly built into a ghost story that's
heavy on atmosphere rather than jump scares and gore and that features a
proper narrative build-up and is steeped in mystery till the last. And of
course, a bunch of strong performances don't hurt any, neither.
