World War II: RAF wing commander Wright (Scott Adkins) is shot down over
Bataan, and he's lucky enough to survive the crash and then can overcome
quite a few would-be captors, but the island is swarming with Japanese
soldiers, and eventually he's brought down by pure power of numbers. He's
placed in Lt. Colonel Ito's (Peter Shinkoda) internment camp and promised
to be executed the very next day - but when Ito sees Wright fight and
defeat his would-be executioner, he's quite impressed by the skill and
courage of his captive, so instead of doing what he should, this being
handing him over to a shooting squad, he has him fight in a series of
death matches against his very best men - and thanks to his excellent
martial arts training, Wright always comes out on top, pretty much buying
himself some more time on a daily basis. And he uses this time well,
plotting an escape plan with his co-captives (among them Michael Copon,
Donald Cerrone, Michael Rene Walton) and even having an aomost romantic
relationship with one of the camp's nurses (Gabbi Garcia). And this way he
manages to survive until the Allied Forces turn the tides ... Now
I'd be lying if I said this film is breaking any new ground storywise, as
in fact5 it seems almost reactionary in its premise. But that doesn't mean
Prisoner of War isn't also wildly entertaining, as it's
pretty much wall-to-wall action and excitement, carried by some great
stunt work, a screenplay that checks all the right boxes and pretty
beautiful cinematography. Sure, you'll probably think you've seen all of
this before, but at the same time you're more than likely to utterly enjoy
this.
